I receive a relatively large number of inquiries regarding research opportunities, so this page serves to answer typical questions that I receive. For more information on admissions, see also NIT Admission.
If you are interested in learning more about my research area, this website provides an overview of my current research and publications. Please do not write simply to say "I would like to know more about your current research projects."
If you are interested in internship opportunities, I am sorry to say that I do not work with undergraduate students from other universities. I work with some NIT undergraduates, and descriptions of such opportunities are available via the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
If you are doing a PhD at another institution, and interested in visiting NIT as part of your research, I am sorry to say that currently, I do not have funding to work with students in this arrangement. If you have funding from your home institution then please provide a concise explanation at the start of your e-mail when you contact me.
If you are interested in PhD opportunities, like most faculty I am continuously searching for new PhD students. I typically admit one student a year, but there is very substantial competition for those positions. Moreover, research support depends on the decisions of our external grant sponsors, which are made throughout the year. So, the number of available new PhD positions evolves throughout the year. I am not able to evaluate your potential for PhD admission without seeing your complete set of application materials. The admissions website gives you the opportunity to list your topics of interest, so noting your interests there will help us get your materials to the appropriate faculty as efficiently as possible. PhD students at NIT are admitted with a commitment by the faculty to provide funding for the student. If you have external fellowship funding (e.g., an INSF, MRUD, or Fulbright Fellowship), please make that clear in your application as it makes it easier for an advisor to commit to admitting you.
If you are interested in postdoctoral opportunities, keep in mind that I am only looking for postdocs with previous experience in a topic related to my research areas, so that you will be able to be productive and somewhat independent from the beginning of your time in the group. If you think that you would be a productive contributor to my group as a postdoc, please e-mail me with the subject “Postdoc inquiry – in response to your website,” and include a concise explanation of how you would contribute to my group and an example of your prior research work (e.g., a notable publication). If you do not provide these items, I am not able to respond to your e-mail.
